Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) forms will change on January 1, with the full implementation of a new law that allows nurse practitioners and physician assistants, under the supervision of a physician and within their scope of practice, to sign POLST forms and make them actionable medical orders. On December 18, both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate passed S. 2425, the “Patient Access and Medicare Protection Act,” which included a provision granting the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) the authority to expedite applications for exemptions from Meaningful Use Stage 2 requirements for the 2015 calendar year. Investigation Finds Few Institutions Disclose Data to ClinicalTrials.gov An investigation by STAT News finds that many research institutions required by law to disclose clinical trial data to ClinicalTrials.gov fail to do so on time or at all. Click here for more information.

The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) introduced significant changes, on an ambitious timeline, to how Medicare will pay oncologists for the care they provide–and now is the time to understand and prepare for these changes. Besides repealing the Sustainable Growth Rate, MACRA’s goal is to move Medicare toward a value-based practice environment that ensures high-quality, affordable health care. The period for requesting an informal review of the 2016 Value Modifier is open now and ends December 16, 2015. For groups with 10 or more eligible professionals (EPs) that are subject to the 2016 Value Modifier, CMS established an Informal Review Period to request a correction of a perceived error in their 2016 Value Modifier calculation. These groups may request an informal review of their 2016 Value Modifier determination, now through December 16, 2015, 8:59pm Pacific Time. For more information click here.

A significant increase in the number of beneficiaries enrolled in California’s Medicaid program since 2014 has added pressure to the 214 areas in the state with physician shortages. Such “doctor deserts,” three-quarters of which are in rural areas, have one physician per 3,500 residents, compared with the statewide average of one doctor per 1,000 residents. USP Compounding Committee has announced its intention to publish the Proposed Handling Hazardous Drugs as a 3-digit Chapter. The official implementation will not be until July 1, 2018. The CMS said it will reprocess ICD-10 claims with National Coverage Determination and Local Coverage Determination errors automatically and at no cost to providers. The agency also said that it is waiting to reprocess some claims with errors resulting from LCDs until Medicare Administrative Contractors have updated criteria needed to process the claims.
